Powhatan County is a county located in the U.S. state — officially, "Commonwealth" — of Virginia. The county is named for the most prominent local leader of the Native Americans at the time the British Colony of Virginia was established at Jamestown in 1607. Chief Powhatan was also the father of Pocahontas. Powhatan County, which combines rural and suburban settings in the early 21st century, is located southwest of Richmond along U.S. Route 60 in the Richmond-Petersburg region and is a portion of the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA).
